While the American Conservative movement has always been a coalition of interests, there is probably no other area where there has been so much tension than in how conservatives understand America’s role in the world. During the Cold War, a commitment to fight global communism was the glue, which held the broader coalition together, but since the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the start of a “War on Terrorism” combined with an intelligence apparatus made robust through the advance of technology, issues of national security and foreign military involvements have been the fault lines underneath the movement.
