Countries around the world in recent years have experienced “democratic backsliding,” a circumstance wherein those institutions conducive to democratic governance and rule of law have been stifled by a ruling regime. As the United States recedes as a global advocate for democracy and human rights, trends are likely to deteriorate even further.
